2021 Holiday Card Trends
It’s that time of year once again! The holidays are here. In an endless list of things to do, sending out holiday cards is surely on the list. Thanks to the help of our design professionals here at SUN, we’ve compiled a list of what we believe are going to be the biggest trends in holiday cards this season.
Watercolor Winter Florals
In the past year, we’ve seen watercolor make a big splash everywhere, no pun intended. From branding elements to wedding invites, watercolor is still going strong as we enter this holiday season. Some of the most stylish cards this winter will include watercolor florals such as fir branches, pinecones, winterberry holly, and even eucalyptus. We’ll see these features as popular backgrounds and photo framing devices. If you’re looking for an elegant touch to your card this year, you can’t go wrong with this artistic and tasteful trend.
Minimalism and White Space
Sometimes less is truly more. Minimalism has become a common trend for those seeking a more sophisticated and modern feel. Chances are, you’ll see lots of white space and strong typography dominate cards this holiday season. Accompanied by good, clean-looking photography, a minimalistic design may say less but bring big impact. Getting rid of card clutter will allow your friends and family to focus on other more important elements of the card, such as your new family photo or well-thought greeting.
Handwritten script fonts
Script fonts are nothing new to holiday cards. The two are often a winter staple that go together like hot cocoa and marshmallows. What we are seeing this year is a shift from fanciful calligraphy to more casual handwritten scripts. During the holidays, everyone wants to feel a special connection to family and friends. Using a handwritten style font in your holiday card design is a good way to give it a personal-feeling touch without having to go through the hard work of manually writing on every single one.
Large Letters
Large and in charge, big letters are in this year. We’ll see words like Joy, Merry, Hope, and Peace spelled out in large letters across the card. Simple, yet effective, this design choice draws attention to the eye and helps the card convey the holiday spirit with as little words as necessary. Furthermore, using bold colors and overlapping the letters with other artwork elements creates increased visual interest that is sure to grab attention all the way from the refrigerator door.
Plaid and Flannel Still reign
Returning to the holiday card scene this year are patterns of plaid and flannel. As always, buffalo plaid will be a popular choice, but we are starting to see the emergence of other color schemes including greens, blues, oranges, and golds. Give your card a cozy and festive feel this year by using a plaid or flannel pattern as a background choice or photo framing element.
Geomentric Color blocking
A new and unique trend we are seeing in cards this year is geometric color blocking. If you’re looking to break from the mould this season, look no further. This design trend ditches every classic holiday theme. Straying away from typical wintery scenes, the style uses large geometric shapes including triangles, circles, and rectangles to give off a modern vibe. Additionally, say goodbye to visions of red and green as these designs are often filled with bright and bold primary colors.
